About Ana Levy-Lyons

I’m a mother, a wife, a writer, a rabbinical student, and a child of God.

I’ve explored religious and spiritual paths, from Hinduism and yogic practices to mystical experiences and plant medicine, and finally going deep on the Jewish path of my own lineage. I’ve lived in different states and countries. I’ve been a musician, an early dot-com tech worker, a rock-climber, a counselor at a French language canoeing camp, an office manager at a Lutheran church, and the person who would get you your babka at an Orthodox Jewish bakery.

I’ve tasted many of the delicacies on the romantic-sexual-family menu, from intentionally childless nonmonogamy to a happy marriage with children. I’ve worked hard to raise a religious family in a secular environment, resist screen-life in the undertow of a technological tidal wave, and nurture creativity in a deadening work and educational system.

I’ve tried and failed and sometimes succeeded in embodying my countercultural ideals. I’ve tried and failed and sometimes succeeded in trusting God to guide my life.

Along my winding pathways, I  got a BA from Brown University and an MDiv from the University of Chicago. I also got ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister and served UU congregations for almost two decades, including twelve years as senior minister of First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn. I've written two books: The Secret Despair of the Secular Left (2025) and No Other Gods: The Politics of the Ten Commandments (2018).

I’m blessed to live with my husband, Jeff, and teenage twins on a small, exotic island off the east coast of North America.
